WASTE TO ENERGY
The Problem:
Landfills, Dumpsites & Leachates
Landfills
Require complex civil works.
Need double geomembrane, pumps and pipes for leachates treatment.
Can pollute freshwater sources.
Create methane and carbon dioxide emissions, harmful to the environment and are expensive to maintain.
Dumpsites
Have the same challenges as landfills however as they are unsanitary and less regulated risks to the environment and human life are dramatically increased.
Landfill Leachates
Are liquid pollution that seep through a landfill's waste piles when it rains or snows. They contain numerous toxic chemicals, many of which are known to cause serious health and environmental issues when not managed to the highest of standards.
"Leachate from landfills can cause cancer and other serious harm, and it's a threat whether it's ingested, inhaled or touched,“
Chung-Ho Lin, Associate research professor, MU Center for Agroforestry, College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.
